As with all hypes, this one looks overestimated. The article dives deeper into the quoted reports and finds that although 62% of U.S. adults get news on social media, only 18% do so often. That’s right: 18 percent. So while it’s true that most adults get at least a little bit of news from social media, it’s deeply misleading to say that a majority “rely on” social media as a news source.
Furthermore I find that only those supporting the losing (Democratic) party are claiming that fake news is a problem. Mail me if you find one Trump supporter making this point.
Don’t get me wrong, I see the problem of fake news now and on the long term. I just think we are overreacting at this point.
